What Am I Doing?

Sometimes I wonder what am I doing making jewelry when I am an artist. Some people say that making jewelry is a form of art, and maybe it is. Lately I've been wondering if I'm going in the wrong direction and that I should be painting instead of doing what I'm doing. I do love making jewelry and everything that goes along with it, and it's nice when people buy it. I think I have to somehow find a happy medium, but I find it hard to go from jewelry making mode to painting mode. Either I do one or the other. It's a constant internal struggle for me....

I can imagine how you struggle with this. I find it hard moving between acrylic mixed media and encaustic and they are both painting!

There are no "shoulds" really. I think you need to spend time doing what makes you happy. (I know happy is a very overused word, but it works for me.) Have you tried working in blocks of time at both? I find you can't just run to your studio and create, you need enough time to get into whatever you are doing.

I also create very small collage works which give me great joy. they are not masterpieces and probably not serious art at all but I create them when I need a break from my main painting projects. Perhaps that approach might also work for you.

Margaret has summed it up well. There is no right or wrong - only what you feel you want to do and what makes you content.

I switch back and forth between creating different things and find that it does help.
