Sometimes I wonder what am I doing making jewelry when I am an artist. Some people say that making jewelry is a form of art, and maybe it is. Lately I've been wondering if I'm going in the wrong direction and that I should be painting instead of doing what I'm doing. I do love making jewelry and everything that goes along with it, and it's nice when people buy it. I think I have to somehow find a happy medium, but I find it hard to go from jewelry making mode to painting mode. Either I do one or the other. It's a constant internal struggle for me....
I can imagine how you struggle with this. I find it hard moving between acrylic mixed media and encaustic and they are both painting!
ReplyDeleteThere are no "shoulds" really. I think you need to spend time doing what makes you happy. (I know happy is a very overused word, but it works for me.) Have you tried working in blocks of time at both? I find you can't just run to your studio and create, you need enough time to get into whatever you are doing.
I also create very small collage works which give me great joy. they are not masterpieces and probably not serious art at all but I create them when I need a break from my main painting projects. Perhaps that approach might also work for you.
Margaret has summed it up well. There is no right or wrong - only what you feel you want to do and what makes you content.
ReplyDeleteI switch back and forth between creating different things and find that it does help.
Margaret and Jeanette, thank you both for your comments! I really do appreciate your input.
